The Bag for Life in the UK - The Ultimate Guide

What is a bag for life?

A ‘bag for life’ refers to a type of bag, typically sold by supermarkets and high-street retailers, that is designed to be purchased once and used for life, with free replacement for damaged or worn-out bags. The bag for life is more than just a bag; it’s a scheme designed to encourage customers to avoid using single-use carrier bags and encourage the uptake of reusable bags with better ergonomics.

A bag for life doesn’t necessarily have a unique or cookie-cutter look, feel or material choice. Reusable bags range from fabric to luxury paper bags, and retailers will often choose their bag for life based on which material choice best gels with their brand and image. Most retailers and particularly large supermarkets, however, will use large woven polypropylene bags as they’re incredibly robust, hard-wearing and perfect for large shopping trips.

Supermarket Bags for Life

Bags for life were first introduced by Waitrose, one of the UK's largest supermarkets, in 1998. Now, all supermarkets have their variations on the bag for life. One thing has stayed the same - you pay once, and your bag is guaranteed for the rest of your life.

Tesco Bag for Life

Tesco’s bags for life range includes cotton tote bags, to large jute tote bags, and also include large woven polypropylene tote bags.

Tesco is well known for its ‘small green bag’, and ‘the big green bag’. These were a duo of woven polypropylene tote bags, which, when reused, enabled customers to earn loyalty rewards points from the ‘Tesco Clubcard’ programme.

Tesco is also well known for its ‘ladybird’ bag, a jute tote bag which showcased a simple design of ladybirds snaking across each side of the bag. These bags included a soft, comfortable cotton-padded handle and were incredibly popular due to their ergonomics and simple design. This bag design became synonymous with Tesco, and could also be found used on some of their woven polypropylene bags for life.

In 2017, Tesco introduced a new bag for life scheme for their standard flexiloop plastic carrier bags. These would be made from 94% recycled plastic, and sold for 10p (at the time, the plastic carrier bag charge was 5p). These bags were replaceable for free if damaged, encouraging customers to reuse even their more simplistic bags.

Do Tesco replace bags for life?

Yes, Tesco will replace a bag for life if it is no longer usable due to damage, disrepair or spoilage.

Sainsbury’s Bag for Life

The Sainsbury’s bag for life range includes jute, plastic and woven polypropylene bags. The Sainsbury’s ‘orange’ colour dominates a wide range of their bags, with the elephant pattern becoming synonymous with the Sainsbury’s brand.

Sainsbury’s best-known bags are their woven polypropylene bags for life, which are commonly adorned with the ‘I’m strong & sturdy’ elephant or the ‘I’m nuts about recycling’ squirrel. These characters are indicative of Sainsbury’s, paired with the shades of orange and simple design that makes them quintessential for the supermarket.

Sainsbury’s also offer a range of fabric bags, such as short & long-handled jute tote bags, ideal for smaller shops. These bags are typically adorned with a peacock and the phrase ‘I’m naturally handsome’, a note to peacocks’ flamboyance and the jute’s natural, biodegradable fibre material.

Similar to Tesco, Sainsbury’s also offer flexiloop-handle and punched-out-handle bags for life which are less stylish and common for reuse but enable customers better & stronger options than vest-style single-use bags.

Do Sainsbury’s replace bags for life?

M&S (Marks & Spencer) Bag for Life

The M&S bag for life range, just like their product range, is high-end and makes a statement. Walking around with an M&S bag for life is indicative of your status – it shows that you shop at M&S.  The M&S carrier bag makes a statement, whether it’s their sustainably certified paper bag or their £8 Yinka Ilori artistic shoulder tote bag, you know when someone has been shopping at M&S.

M&S is, of course, both a department store and a supermarket. When it comes to the bag for life, these often transcend the retail segments, with the common options of jute tote bags, woven polypropylene, and flexiloop handle plastic bags forming the core of their range.

There’s nothing too special about the M&S bags for life. Clever designs are secondary to the strength of their premium brand which is always front & centre, a foil to Sainsbury’s, Tesco and other retailers which favour more memorable & salient designs.

The M&S Yinka Ilori collaboration is, however, a combination of premium brand and luxury design. Yinka Ilori MBE is a British artist and designer known for bold, bright colours and playful designs. The collaboration includes a high-quality canvas tote bag made from 99% recycled plastics, short carry & long shoulder handles, as well as zip-fastening, taking reusability to the next level. The campaign also includes a high-quality plastic flexiloop handle carrier bag with larger-than-usual loop handles and 100% recycled plastic material.

The Asda bag for life range is typically associated with its flexiloop polythene bags which are adorned with either the ‘bring it home’ or just ‘bag for life’ messaging. These bags are printed with a nature-scape, alluding to their eco-friendliness and contribution to less polluted natural environments.

Asda’s range also includes woven polypropylene bags, typically using green and yellow designs with fruits such as limes, lemons, avocados and bananas. This, again, ties in with the natural & eco-friendly messaging & intentions behind the bag for life scheme.

One of the most interesting facets of Waitrose’s bag-for-life range is their insulated freezer bags. These are made from woven polypropylene material with an insulated interior lining, great for ensuring warm or cool foods retain their temperature during long shopping trips. It’s these sorts of hyper-functional bags and ancillaries that set the high-end supermarkets apart from the rest of the market.

Typically, paper bags are less favoured due to their tendency to fail under liquid damage and heavy weight. Pushing these bags means that the bag for life range are less in the foreground at Morrisons as they aim to create an alternative that’s reusable and home-recyclable.

These bags have designs which typically focus on their fresh & British produce messaging, going hand-in-hand with their market-style store layout. This is useful for loose items to stop them rolling or jumping out of the bag during a bumpy car ride.

Lidl also provide polythene bags with flexiloop handles, similar to all other supermarket retailers, which they will replace free of charge if damaged. Frequently Asked Questions about Bags for Life

Can I recycle a bag for life in the UK?

You should avoid recycling a bag for life at home in the UK.

Bags for life can be returned to the store to be replaced with new bags if damaged. If you simply want to dispose of your bag for life, you should return it to the store to be disposed of properly. Most bags for life cannot be recycled at home, so it’s much more sensible to return them to the store.

How to fold a bag for life?

Bags for life typically have a gusset section between the two main faces of the bag. This gusset section can be pushed into the bag, and the bottom of the bag can then be folded up to enable it to lay flat. The bag can then be folded down to whatever size required to store.

Can bags for life go in the washing machine?

Most bags for life are made from polypropylene, which is a type of plastic that cannot be machine-washed. Certain bag materials such as cotton may be able to be machine-washed; however, you should always check the bag label which may contain washing instructions.

Bags that cannot be machine washed should be washed with a damp cloth or in cool, soapy water in the sink.

How long should a bag for life last?

Bags for life can last for thousands of uses and multiple years, but it will always depend on how well they are taken care of. Ultimately, as these bags are easily recycled and replaced for free by the retailer, you never need to worry about how long they will last.

Are bags for life waterproof?

Most bags for life are made from woven polypropylene, which is mostly waterproof. A deteriorated bag for life may have a looser weave, meaning water could creep into the holes in the bag.

The waterproof nature of a bag for life will always depend on the material. For instance, a plastic bag for life is waterproof, but a cotton bag for life is not.

How do you organise & store bags for life?

The best way to organise & store bags for life is to fold them up and contain them within a box or another bag. This will depend on how many bags you have, and how frequently you want to reuse them.

You may want to use the handles of your bag for life to hang them from a coat hook for neat storage and easy use and reuse.

How much can a bag for life hold?

A traditional, large polypropylene bag for life can hold around 25-30kg of items.

Bags for life come in all shapes and sizes, with smaller bags such as cotton tote bags and jute bags typically able to hold 10-15kg, and plastic carrier bags straining at around 20kg.

How many times do you need to use a bag for life?

There is no limit to how many times you can use a bag for life.

There is some research to suggest that a bag for life needs to be used thousands of times to be eco-friendlier than a traditional plastic bag, however with lots of factors in play, it is not easy to estimate how this translates across different material types.

One of the main reasons for bag for life use is to reduce unnecessary wastage of single-use bags, whether this be plastic or paper. It is beneficial to reuse the same bags multiple times, than use disposable options.

Can you exchange a bag for life?

Bags for life can be exchanged for new bags if the bag is damaged or unusable.

You cannot typically exchange a bag for life for something other than a new bag for life.
